Most people think an infrared panel is just a white plate that gets hot. They look at the wattage, they look at the price, they buy it on Amazon, they screw it to the wall and leave it plugged in. Then they complain that it consumes too much. The truth is simple. The panel is only 30% of the system. The thermostat is 70%. Without the right thermostat, you don’t have infrared heating, you just have an expensive electric radiator.
An infrared panel heats differently than anything you had before. A gas radiator heats air, so it needs to run for hours to warm up the whole volume of air in the room. An infrared panel heats solid objects directly with light rays. In 10 minutes your floor is warm, in 20 minutes your walls are warm. If you leave it on without control, it will continue to heat even when the walls are already at 24 degrees. You waste energy, the room overheats, you open a window and you throw your money outside.
A smart thermostat does the opposite. It lets the panel run at full power for 15 minutes to charge the walls with heat, then it switches it off completely. The warm walls keep giving heat back to the room for the next 45 minutes like a traditional stone stove. The thermostat measures when the walls start to cool down and gives another short pulse. This is called pulse heating. A 700W panel in a 14 sqm room effectively works only 3 hours per day instead of 8, but you feel warm all day.

The 3 Things Your Thermostat Must Have for Infrared
At TOP IR Paneli we tested dozens of thermostats and we include only the one that really works for radiant heat. This is what you must demand.
1. A separate wireless sensor, not a thermostat on the panel itself
If the thermostat is built into the panel, it measures its own heat, not your room. It is always wrong by 5-6 degrees. You need a small wireless sensor on the opposite wall or on the table that measures the real temperature where you live, where you sit and sleep. The panel can be on the ceiling in the middle of the room and the sensor can be at head height near your sofa. That is the only way to get real comfort.
2. Full WiFi control with weekly zones
This is where you save 30 to 50 percent compared to gas. With our TOP IR Paneli app you create a different life for each room. Living room 21 degrees from 17:00 to 23:00, kitchen only in the morning, bedroom 19 degrees for sleeping but 22 degrees for 30 minutes before you get into bed, office only on weekdays, guest room at 15 degrees anti-mold all winter. You heat only the rooms you use. With gas you must heat everything because you have one boiler for the whole house.
And you control everything from your phone. You are driving to your second home at the coast, you open the app one hour before arrival, you tap Living and Bathroom, and when you open the door the floor is warm and the shower is ready. If you left and forgot to switch off, you do it from the highway with one tap.
3. Anti-mold, anti-freeze and open-window detection
A good thermostat for IR is smarter than a gas thermostat. It has a special dry-wall mode that even when you are away for months keeps walls at 15.5 degrees with a few cents per day. Because the walls stay warmer than air, condensation physically cannot form and black mold dies forever. And because TOP IR Paneli panels have no water inside, there is nothing that can freeze, burst or flood. You can leave your mountain house completely off at minus 10 degrees.
Our thermostats also have open-window detection. If you open a window for 10 minutes, the sensor sees the sudden temperature drop and stops the panel immediately so you don’t heat the garden.
What Does It Cost With and Without a Thermostat?
Let’s be honest with numbers from a real apartment in Nova Gorica. Bedroom 14 sqm, 700W ceiling panel. Without thermostat always on 8 hours at night: 5.6 kWh per day x 0.25 EUR = 1.40 EUR per day x 180 days = 252 EUR for one room per winter. Same room with TOP IR Paneli WiFi thermostat with zone program: panel pulses 20 minutes per hour, effective work 2.8 hours per day: 1.96 kWh per day x 0.25 EUR = 0.49 EUR per day x 180 days = 88 EUR for one room per winter.
You save 164 EUR in one room alone, every winter, for the next 25 years. And you have perfect comfort, warm floor, no dust, no dry air, no mold. An IR panel without a smart thermostat is a cost. An IR panel with a TOP IR Paneli smart thermostat is an investment that pays for itself in the first season.
