SSL Certificate

SSL is commonly used as a security protocol to protect the user data from the prying eyes of scammers. Fundamentally, an SSL certificate consists of data files that bind a cryptographic key to the details of an organization. All of these processes are done online. Websites usually install it so that when a user activates it, the servers together with the web are secured, and the user data remains safe.

How does SSL work?

The secure sockets layer known as SSL certificate is a digital security protocol that aims to safeguard user connections and eliminate chances of data theft. To accomplish all of these, they use the Public key cryptography to encrypt all connections on sites that it is installed.

What happens is that the key usually harnesses the power numbers, which are long and randomly generated, which are called keys. So, basically, one is public, and the other is a private key. Therefore, the public key is found in the public domain, and you can use it on your server. So, as you encrypt a message, it can only be decrypted by the private key.  For example, if you sent your bank statements to your lender via the website, the message is encrypted. On arrival to the lender, it can be opened ie, decryption with a different key (the second set). Even though spyware can intercept the message before it reaches its destination, it cannot decrypt it using any tool. At least that tool is not available yet.

You can know if you are using n SSL protected site if you can see a padlock on the left-hand side of the search bar. Also, there are websites that indicate the SSL logo on the right-hand bottom side. And finally, the HTTPS with the “S” standing for security.

Benefits of an SSL certificate

Having seen the unprecedented spike in the number of cases of individuals who get scammed online, you cannot afford to lack this protocol. Below are some of its benefits.

  • They secure data between computer servers.
  • A secure site boosts your search engine rankings
  • Enhances consumer confidence
  • Boosts your sites ROI

Where to get an SSL certificate

Your devices maintain lists of trusted certificates and authorities you can get them from. Therefore, you need to purchase them from a trusted certificate authority lest your device’s OS and web browsers decline the authenticity of the installed certificates.

When the user logs into your site and finds warnings about insecurity or untrusted certificates, you are likely to lose clients and market and eventually be demoted on the SERPs. Therefore, the licenses you install must be trusted and exist on the side of the end-user.

The bottom line

SSL certificates are used to protect your personal information and private chats. You may not want information such as your credit card information, bank statements, social security details, blueprints, etc. getting out to some individuals who are after sabotage. All sites should have this protection especially those that deal with user’s sensitive information.
